Fall 2013
Areas of focus
- Connect the ancient western philosophy to the foundations of the course
- Select reading materials that are engaging and intellectually stimulating
Procedures to enact the areas of focus
- Tamar Gendler of Yale University and Michael Sandel of Harvard both provide an excellent set of contemporary examples and examine them using the foundations of ancient western philosophy with a strong focus on morality and justice. This philosophical foundation has been used in this course to establish a framework to judge the morality of some historical figures and the reflect on ethical systems that were prominent during selected historical events.
- New readings by Mary Cowehy (responding to tragedy and gender issues), Beverly Tatum (black issues), and Bill Bigelow (Latino issues) were used this semester. The students had animated discussions about the selected texts.
- Selected lectures from Alternative Radio were shared with students to hone their understanding of the big picture in relation to economics, social justice, and the environment.
