Fall 2013
As edTAP is in the process of implementation, some TCH 210 topic specifically target educational elements (theoretical and practical) that our students need to pay careful attention to. During this semester, I developed activities to create discussion about these topics.
Theory into Practice. Students write two reports during the semester to connect the theories they learn about in class with clinical observations they typically complete in surrounding schools. Students are typically able to make those connections and articulate how a given theory explains students' behavior. However, during spring 2013 when I asked my students to use one theory to develop a lesson, the majority of the students used the theory of behaviorism. To encourage the students to entertain the variety of theories discussed in class I created a new activity asking the to use each theory to create a lesson on a topic of their choice.
Quizzes. As I indicated to my students, from my perspective quizzes are learning and not evaluation tools. As such, I use them to allow my students to enhance what they have learned from the textbook. The students typically can take the quiz twice for practice, during which a 10-item quiz is open for 20 minutes. The questions are pooled from a big pool of questions. The students can then take the quiz for a grade; they also have the opportunity to take the quiz twice for half the time; the highest point is recorded.
Social and Emotional Standards. As Illinois State's social and emotional standards were aligned to the course for this semester, I created assignments to make sure that the students have multiple opportunities to identify them and develop lessons and classroom activities to address them.
Early development of an Online course. This document outlines the basic components of the course. The Quality Matters Rubric was used to guide the basic elements of the design. Some useful websites: Quality Matters R
